CALVIÁ, MALLORCA

A pavilion in connection with nature

The plot of Costa de la Calma, in Mallorca, contains a large number of pine trees and native vegetation, a small white house from the 70s with a gable roof finished in Arabic tile, and a set of passable exterior paths made with marés stone from Mallorca.

The original house, built with prefabricated concrete beams, offers small rooms connected to a living room with a fireplace as the heart of the layout. The connections between the house and the garden are relatively complicated, as the height difference is considerable and the stairs are long, and the beautiful distant views of the landscape intermingle with the adjacent buildings.

The project was resolved with a single curved volume, modeled to avoid the felling of the original trees, open to frame the views of the distant landscape and cantilevered to generate a shaded porch in connection with the pool, where, in the summer season, you you will enjoy the Mediterranean climate all day long.

The existing architecture remains intact. Like two objects of different scale, use and age, the walls of the new architecture are covered in terracotta, its large windows open towards the views, and are strategically placed to generate cross ventilation, and the roof – visible from the street – is becomes a green roof, first to disappear and second to give the trees and vegetation the opportunity to be the protagonists of the house.
